Microsoft Courier: the uber tablet that will (hopefully) replace my laptop

by Rod Edwards on September 23, 2009

This looks pretty sweet, I’m not afraid to say. I love the iPhone, but the small screen form factor becomes tiring when trying to conduct real business for an extended time. Lugging around a laptop is a pain, and a netbook just feels unsatisfactory as either a productivity machine or a communication device. A small, long-battery, touch tablet like this would fit the middle ground between phone and laptop perfectly.

Two points:

1) This is a concept. It’s not a final product.
2) This is Microsoft’s attempt to play “me too” since the buzz has been whirling around Apple’s tablet for some time. Resist the lure of vaporware (which is Microsoft’s typical M.O.) – Apple will have something you’ll love very soon and you don’t want to be kicking yourself that you didn’t wait to see what it was.

Looks interesting but the screen is still small. I think the idea is to go to a smaller and lighter laptop that may have bluetooth for a phone remote etc.

@bob – MS has more than apple at the moment. If MS is at fault for relying on vaporware, apple’s at fault for relying on rumours.

@rc – The streamlining of the OS to fit a small form factor is what carries the value for me. I don’t think cramming a laptop OS into continually smaller laptops works particularly well.

Yes a valid point, laptop O/S is merely stripped down desktop most of the time unless you get a rejigged version, they do exist. Apple is better in this area no doubt we would agree but MS still runs the backbone of the corporate world. Having had PDA’s and laptops, I found the screen not practical on the pda and the laptop as you say to eventually feel like a boat anchor. Fancy phones have come a long way but two line emails only take you so far as a real tool to do work. I like the new notepads and the ideas being put forth in them early on.
