Racist parents lose custody of children – thank goodness

by Rod Edwards on February 12, 2010

The bizarre case dwelled on Norse mythology, decoded Hitler references and heard a seven-year-old girl’s graphic description of how to kill black people.

It doesn’t sound like Mom was particulary interested in custody anyway, as she skipped town and province as soon as CFS took the kids and hasn’t been back. Whatever the case, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the kids have a better chance in foster care than with their “parents.”

Now, playing the devil’s advocate.. do we go after Muslim parents who incite their children to hatred, or black parents who support black power, in all its guises? Or are the courts only willing to see ‘white’ racism?

I would suggest an addendum to the body of law on hate crime:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/hatecrimes/

The addendum would make criminal actions perpetuating hate crime among identified vulnerable groups – like children, or anyone that cannot, or does not know better. Teaching 7 year olds how to murder black people would fit that definition. So would teaching severely mentally disabled people how to identify and kill Jewish people. Those are both examples of hate crimes in my mind.

In regards to other cultural differences: I think we (Canadians) do need to make a stand against moral relativism and decide as a people that things like institutionalized misogyny are unacceptable. The Rand-ian notion of freedom was put forward in a much more culturally homogeneous time.

Furthering Kursk’s vein of questioning, does teaching one’s kids that homosexuality is a sin amount to “emotional abuse”?

I would argue that the Rand-ian notion of freedom is even more important now in a culturally heterogeneous time, since otherwise the coercive levers of social change are susceptible to control by particular groups to the possible detriment of the rest.

We are crossing a fine line here. I don’t support all of the behaviour of these people but each group in society would want some children separated from their parents based on their own perceptions of security. Thus, everyone would not be fit to be parents of a child ultimately. That kind of outcome is not of benefit to society.
