I would argue that the Rand-ian notion of freedom is even more important now in a culturally heterogeneous time, since otherwise the coercive levers of social change are susceptible to control by particular groups to the possible detriment of the rest.

The addendum would make criminal actions perpetuating hate crime among identified vulnerable groups – like children, or anyone that cannot, or does not know better. Teaching 7 year olds how to murder black people would fit that definition. So would teaching severely mentally disabled people how to identify and kill Jewish people. Those are both examples of hate crimes in my mind.

In regards to other cultural differences: I think we (Canadians) do need to make a stand against moral relativism and decide as a people that things like institutionalized misogyny are unacceptable. The Rand-ian notion of freedom was put forward in a much more culturally homogeneous time.
